The aunt now blew on a horn, and all the birds of the air gathered around her from every place under the heavens, and she asked each in turn where it dwelt, and each told her; but none knew of the flaming well, till an old eagle said, “I left Tubber Tintye today.”
“How are all the people there (как там /поживают/ все люди)?” asked the aunt.
“They are all asleep since yesterday morning (они все спят: «спящие» со вчерашнего утра),” answered the old eagle (ответил старый орел).

The prince of the Lonesome Island stood in front of his aunt’s stables, shook the bridle, and out came a dirty, lean little shaggy horse.
“Sit on my back, son of the king of Erin and the queen of Lonesome Island,” said the little shaggy horse.
This was the first time (это был /самый/ первый раз; time – время; раз, случай) the prince had heard of his father (когда принц узнал: «услышал» о своем отце; to hear /heard/ – слышать; узнавать /о чем-л./). He mounted the horse (он сел верхом = вскочилна коня; to mount – взбираться, восходить, подниматься; садиться /на лошадь, в седло и т. п./), which said (который сказал), “Keep a firm grip now (теперь держись крепко: «сохраняй крепкое сжатие»; grip – схватывание, сжатие; to keep a grip – ухватиться /за что-л./, сжать /что-л./), for I shall clear the river of fire at a single bound (потому что я перескочу огненную реку: «реку огня» одним-единственным прыжком; to clear – расчищать, очищать; взять барьер, преодолеть препятствие), and pass the poison-trees (и проеду мимо ядовитых деревьев); but if you touch any part of the trees (но если ты коснешься какой-нибудь части деревьев), even with a thread of the clothing that’s on you (/пусть/ даже ниточкой одежды, которая на тебе /надета/), you’ll never eat another bite (ты никогда больше не съешь куска /пищи/; bite – кусание, укус; кусок /пищи/); and as I rush by the end of the castle of Tubber Tintye (и когда я промчусь у конца = угла замка) with the speed of the wind (со скоростью ветра), you must spring from my back through an open window (ты должен прыгнуть с моей спины сквозь открытое окно) that is there (которое там расположено); and if you don’t get in at the window (и если ты не проникнешь внутрь через /то/ окно), you’re done for (ты пропал; to do – делать, производить действие; to be done for smb., smth. – губить). He mounted the horse, which said, “Keep a firm grip now, for I shall clear the river of fire at a single bound, and pass the poison-trees; but if you touch any part of the trees, even with a thread of the clothing that’s on you, you’ll never eat another bite; and as I rush by the end of the castle of Tubber Tintye with the speed of the wind, you must spring from my back through an open window that is there; and if you don’t get in at the window, you’re done for. I’ll wait for you outside till you are ready to go back to Erin.”

The prince did as the little horse told him. They crossed the river of fire, escaped the touch of the poison-trees, and as the horse shot past the castle, the prince sprang through the open window, and came down safe and sound inside.
The whole place (все /это/ место), enormous in extent (огромное по /своим/ размерам; extent – протяжение, протяженность; размер, величина), was filled with sleeping giants and monsters of sea and land (было заполнено спящими великанами и чудовищами, морскими и земными: «моря и земли»), – great whales (огромными китами), long slippery eels (длинными скользкими угрями), bears (медведями), and beasts of every form and kind (и дикими животными всех форм и видов; form – форма, внешний вид; вид, разновидность, тип). The prince passed through them and over them (принц шел между ними и наступая на них: «сквозь них и над ними») till he came to a great stairway (пока он не пришел к огромной = широкой лестнице; stairway – лестница, лестничный марш; ряд ступеней; пролет лестницы).
The whole place, enormous in extent, was filled with sleeping giants and monsters of sea and land, – great whales, long slippery eels, bears, and beasts of every form and kind. The prince passed through them and over them till he came to a great stairway.

At the head of the stairway he went into a chamber, where he found the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, stretched on a couch asleep. “I’ll have nothing to say to you,” thought he, and went on to the next; and so he looked into twelve chambers. In each was a woman more beautiful than the one before.
