On a day when the Gruagach and his eleven sons were out hunting, the maid was going with a tub of dirty water to throw it into the river that ran by the side of the house. She went through the cave of concealment where the fisherman’s son was bound, and he asked of her the wetting of his mouth from the tub.
“Oh! the Gruagach would take the life of me (Груагах лишил бы меня жизни: «заберет жизнь у меня»),” said she, “when he comes home (когда он вернется домой), if I gave you as much as one drop (если бы я дала тебе всего одну лишь каплю: «так много как одну каплю»; to give /gave, given/).”
“Well,” said he, “when I was in this house before (когда я был в этом доме прежде), and when I had power in my hands (и когда в моих руках была власть), it’s good and kind I was to you (я был с тобой добр и любезен; good – хороший; милый, любезный); and when I get out of this confinement (и когда я выберусь из этого заточения; confinement – ограничение, сужение /свободы, пространства и т. д./; тюремное заключение; to confine – ограничивать; заключать в тюрьму) I’ll do you a turn (я тебе отплачу добром; turn – поворот; очередь; to do a good turn – оказать услугу за услугу), if you give me the wetting of my mouth now (если ты сейчас смочишь мне рот водой: «если ты дашь мне смачивание водой моего рта сейчас»).”
“Oh! the Gruagach would take the life of me,” said she, “when he comes home, if I gave you as much as one drop.”
“Well,” said he, “when I was in this house before, and when I had power in my hands, it’s good and kind I was to you; and when I get out of this confinement I’ll do you a turn, if you give me the wetting of my mouth now.”
The maid put the tub near his lips (служанка приложила бадью к его губам: «приложила бадью близко его губ»).
“Oh! I can’t stoop to drink (я не могу наклониться, чтобы попить) unless you untie one knot from my throat (пока ты не развяжешь один узел у меня на горле: «с моего горла»),” said he.

Then she put the tub down (тогда она опустила бадью), stooped to him (склонилась к нему), and loosed one knot from his throat (и ослабила один узел у него на шее: «от его горла»; to loose – освобождать, спускать с цепи и т. п.; развязывать, отвязывать). When she loosed the one knot (когда она ослабила один узел) he made an eel of himself (он превратился в угря: «он сделал угря из себя самого»), and dropped into the tub (и нырнул: «упал» в бадью; to drop – капать, стекать каплями; падать, валиться).
Then she put the tub down, stooped to him, and loosed one knot from his throat. When she loosed the one knot he made an eel of himself, and dropped into the tub.
There he began shaking the water (там он начал взбалтывать воду; to begin /began, begun/; to shake – трясти, сотрясать; взбалтывать), till he put some of it on the ground (пока не выплеснул немного на землю: «до тех пор пока он не положил немного из нее на землю»), and when he had the place about him wet (а когда место вокруг него стало влажным; to have /had/ – иметь; сделать или устроить так, чтобы что-л. оказалось каким-то или где-то), he sprang from the tub (он выпрыгнул из бадьи; to spring /sprang, sprung/), and slipped along out under the door (и проскользнул под дверью).
There he began shaking the water, till he put some of it on the ground, and when he had the place about him wet, he sprang from the tub, and slipped along out under the door.
The maid caught him (служанка поймала его; to catch /caught/); but could not hold him (но не смогла его удержать), he was so slippery (таким скользким он был). He made his way from the door to the river (он направился от двери к реке: «он совершил свой путь от двери к реке»), which ran near the side of the house (которая протекала рядом с домом; to run /ran, run/ – бежать, бегать; литься, течь, струиться; side – сторона, бок; место рядом).
When the Gruagach na g-cleasan came home in the evening with his eleven sons (когда Хитрый Груагах вернулся домой вечером со своими одиннадцатью сыновьями), they went to take a look at the fisherman’s son (они пошли взглянуть на сына рыбака); but he was not to be seen (но его /нигде/ не было видно; to see /saw, seen/).
The maid caught him; but could not hold him, he was so slippery. He made his way from the door to the river, which ran near the side of the house.
When the Gruagach na g-cleasan came home in the evening with his eleven sons, they went to take a look at the fisherman’s son; but he was not to be seen.
Then the Gruagach called the maid (тогда Груагах позвал служанку; to call – кричать; звать), and taking his sword (и, взяв свой меч), said (сказал), “I’ll take the head off you (я лишу тебя головы: «я сниму голову с тебя»; to take – брать; to take smth., smb. off smth., smb. – снимать что-л. с чего-л.) if you don’t tell me this minute (если ты не расскажешь мне сию же минуту) what happened while I was gone (что случилось, пока меня не было: «я был ушедшим»).”
Then the Gruagach called the maid, and taking his sword, said, “I’ll take the head off you if you don’t tell me this minute what happened while I was gone.”
“Oh!” said the maid, “he begged so hard for a drop of dirty water (он так упорно умолял /дать ему/ каплю грязной воды) to wet his mouth (чтобы смочить рот) that I hadn’t the heart to refuse (что я не смогла отказать: «я не имела мужества отказать»; heart – сердце; мужество, смелость, отвага; to have the heart to do smth. – решиться сделать что-л.), for ’t is good he was to me and kind each time he saw me (потому что добрым он был ко мне и любезным каждый раз, когда он видел меня; good – хороший; добрый, дружелюбный) when he was here in the house before (когда он был = жил здесь в доме прежде).
“Oh!” said the maid, “he begged so hard for a drop of dirty water to wet his mouth that I hadn’t the heart to refuse, for’t is good he was to me and kind each time he saw me when he was here in the house before.
When the water touched his mouth (когда вода коснулась его рта), he made an eel of himself (он обратился угрем: «он сделал угря из себя самого»), spilled water out of the tub (расплескал воду из бадьи), and slipped along over the wet place to the river outside (и проскользнул по тому мокрому месту к реке на улице). I caught him to bring him back (я поймала его, чтобы принести его обратно = вернуть его), but I couldn’t hold him (но я не смогла удержать его); in spite of all I could do (несмотря ни на что: «вопреки всему, что я могла сделать»), he made away (он улизнул; to make away – убежать, улизнуть).”
The Gruagach dropped his sword (Груагах бросил свой меч; to drop – капать, стекать каплями; ронять, выпускать, бросать), and went to the water side with his sons (и пошел к берегу реки вместе со своими сыновьями; water – вода; водоем, озеро, река, пруд; side – сторона, бок; берег).
When the water touched his mouth, he made an eel of himself, spilled water out of the tub, and slipped along over the wet place to the river outside. I caught him to bring him back, but I couldn’t hold him; in spite of all I could do, he made away.”
The Gruagach dropped his sword, and went to the water side with his sons.
The sons made eleven eels of themselves (сыновья превратились в одиннадцать угрей: «сыновья сделали одиннадцать угрей из самих себя»), and the Gruagach their father was the twelfth (а Груагах, их отец, был двенадцатым). They went around in the water (в воде они плавали: «следовали» повсюду; to go /went, gone/ – идти, ходить; направляться, следовать; around – кругом, вокруг; повсюду), searching in every place (обшаривая каждый уголок: «ища в каждом месте»; to search – искать, разыскивать; обыскивать, обшаривать), and there was not a stone in the river that they passed (и не было ни одного камня в той реке, мимо которого они бы проплыли: «прошли»; to pass – идти, проходить; проходить мимо, миновать) without looking under and around it (не заглянув под него или за него: «вокруг него») for the old fisherman’s son (в поисках сына старого рыбака).
The sons made eleven eels of themselves, and the Gruagach their father was the twelfth. They went around in the water, searching in every place, and there was not a stone in the river that they passed without looking under and around it for the old fisherman’s son.
And when he knew (а когда он понял; to know /knew, known/ – знать; понимать, осознавать) that they were after him (что они гонятся за ним; after – после; /движение вслед за кем-л./ за, вслед за), he made himself into a salmon (он превратился в лосося); and when they knew he was a salmon (а когда они узнали, что он стал лососем), the sons made eleven otters of themselves (сыновья превратились в одиннадцать выдр), and the Gruagach made himself the twelfth (а Груагах стал: «сделал себя» двенадцатой).
And when he knew that they were after him, he made himself into a salmon; and when they knew he was a salmon, the sons made eleven otters of themselves, and the Gruagach made himself the twelfth.
