Такова была наша первоначальная теория тотемизма. Ее можно назвать теорией «внешней души», в соответствии с которой тотем есть вместилище, в котором человек хранит свою душу, подобно тому, как в сказках колдун хранит свою душу в попугае, а великан – в яйце внутри утки. Затем эта теория была нами пересмотрена в рамках производственной теории, а еще позже – в рамках теории тотемизма зачатия (см. выше). Однако первая теория все же может иметь точки соприкосновения с двумя последними. Например, если человек принадлежит тотему эму, ибо считается, что дух эму вошел в его мать при зачатии (в рамках теории тотемизма зачатия), то этому человеку приписывается особый дар заботы об эму и их приумножении во благо племени (в рамках производственной теории). Соответственно, могло быть желательным, чтобы по достижении половой зрелости он бы поместил свою душу в эму (согласно теории «внешней души») для ее безопасности или чтобы обрести более прочную связь с этими птицами и таким образом усилить свой природный дар. При таком раскладе все три теории можно рассматривать не как противоречащие друг другу, но как дополняющие друг друга.
