Каир, как и все города во всем мире, представляет собой сочетание крайностей, вот только эти крайности в нем выражены, пожалуй, отчетливее, чем где бы то ни было. В Каире постоянно идет борьба между конкурирующими социально-экономическими «центрами притяжения» — между современностью и традицией, между западным влиянием и исламским каноном, между — это принципиальнее всего — богатством и нищетой. Жители Каира терпимо относятся к шуму, пыли и бытовым неудобствам. Именно их изобретательность и оптимизм не позволяют городу скатиться в пучину. Все горожане, от заббалин до острословов-таксистов, воспринимают жизнь добродушно и с юмором, терпеливо и с надеждами на лучшее. Вдобавок жители Каира гордятся своим городом — и гордость их вполне оправданна, ведь за ними пять тысячелетий истории и величайшие памятники человечества. Им хватает силы спокойно воспринимать житейские неурядицы — в конце концов, они твердо знают, что все на свете происходит по воле Аллаха. Иншалла, Каир, рано или поздно все надежды сбудутся.
