The book deals with the important period of 1794-1799 in the life and work of the leader of the French royalist movement, Louis-Stanislas-Xavier, Count of Provence, proclaimed in 1795 the king Louis XVIII. In France, the Thermidor and the Directory periods were characterized by a weariness from the republic and nostalgia for the monarchy. The royalists repeatedly won the elections to the legislature, and the restoration of the monarchy seemed not only possible, but rather inevitable. All these years being in exile, Louis XVIII did everything he could to restore the monarchy and to regain the throne of his ancestors. The study is centered on his projects and plans, his entourage and intrigues, his struggle for international recognition and his work upon the laws for the renewed French monarchy. Close attention is paid to his leadership of the royalist movement, the successes and downfalls of the supporters of the restoration. The book is based on a wide range of French, English and Russian archival documents.
