В конце зимы флотилия нотов высадилась около обгорелых руин минерального прииска. Но не успели они отойти от берега, как все полегли под смертоносным дождем алюминиевых пуль и маленьких бомб.
В тот день мир покорился новой силе.
Они пришли в священную первую ночь лета. Было много споров о том, как подобает отметить это событие. Одна молодая Охотница – нотка, обладавшая поразительным даром хранить за горящими очами странное и невообразимое, – настояла на отмене традиционной церемонии. Всем родом устремившись мимо вросшего изваяния исчезнувшего бога, ноты прошли через пробитые в баррикаде бреши и в почтительном молчании вступили в холмистый край. Сильные тащили слабых, позади не осталось никого. Во главе шел отважный молодец, нанесший первый удар их заклятому врагу. Его единственным оружием была простая, ныне прославленная кирка.
Сегодня он заботливо нес нечто похожее на круглый камень, сероватое и удивительно легкое, украшенное множеством складок и вмятин, зеркально отражавших родовой разум человеческих существ.
Охотники шли по пятам, неся двадцать семь душ коварных, благословенных чужаков.
Достопочтенные вожаки вошли в логово.
Другие ноты остались молча ждать в лесных потемках, сгрудившись под исполинским вихорником.
Двадцать восемь монстров внесли в дальнюю комнату.
Внутри аккуратными рядами, с подписями на все еще нечитаемом языке, покоилось свыше трех сотен Костоедов, былых обитателей этой братской могилы.
Некоторые ноты предлагали утопить весь этот ужас в море.
Но победили другие – по крайней мере пока. А чтобы временное стало вечным, молодая Охотница напомнила присутствующим, как мало им известно о существах, с которыми они воевали. Происхождение и магия этих демонов оставались тайной за семью печатями. Но время хранило больше тайн, а терпение могло быть вечным. Благодаря реликвиям, сохраненным в святилище монстра, потомки когда-нибудь покончат с невежеством, и мудрейшие души воспользуются орудиями незваных гостей.
Кто знает, куда заведет очередной миллиард лет?
Быть может, кто-то могущественный найдет убедительную причину, чтобы вернуть мертвым монстрам и лица, и члены, и живые голоса.
Но не свободу, надеялась она.
Как и все добропорядочные ноты…

– Меня зовут… – начала она.
– Мама, – улыбнулся мальчик.
– Точно?
И он рассмеялся одной из их старых, любимых шуток. Конечно, она была его мамой и ни в каком другом имени из его уст не нуждалась. Они по-прежнему оставались вдвоем, действуя как один. Среди деревьев-небоскребов жили и другие одиночки. Но времена стояли сравнительно сытые, и между монстрами не было серьезных конфликтов. Не возникало и союзов. Сотрудничество сопровождалось требованиями, и местные монстры не видели надобности объединяться даже на день.
– Хочу историю, – сказал малыш.
Они сидели в темноте под шкурой улита, слушая, как барабанит и стекает в раскисшую почву дождь.
– Ладно, – ответила мать.
– А о чем? – спросил он нетерпеливо.
– Об острове.
– Об отце?
– Что – об отце?
– Хочу послушать, как он тебя спас и выходил… пока не… – его неокрепший голос умолк, сменившись привычным печальным молчанием.
– Наверное, в другой раз.
– Тогда о чем?
Она обняла своего крепкого малютку-монстра и стиснула так, что больно стало обоим. Чуть погодя сказала:
– Я расскажу тебе о звездах, и о вселенной за звездами, и о нашем великом роде, и о чудесах, которые можно узреть только мысленным взором…
