Возможно, вы не считаете себя «философом», но ведь большинство названных здесь мужчин и женщин тоже не считали себя философами. Однако по любым мыслимым определениям они ими были. А теперь и вы тоже. Вы человек действия. Нить стоицизма проходит через вашу жизнь точно так же, как проходила через жизнь этих людей, точно так же, как проходила через всю историю — иногда явно, иногда нет.
Суть философии — это действие. Способность перевернуть препятствие с помощью разума. Понимание сути наших проблем и их контекста. Умение смотреть на вещи философски и действовать соответствующе.
Как я пытался показать в этой книге, множество людей воплощали лучшие примеры стоицизма, сами не зная этого. Эти люди не были писателями или ораторами, они были практиками — как и вы.
Столетиями нас лишали такой мудрости: кабинетные ученые намеренно скрывали ее. У нас отнимали истинную пользу философии — применение ее в качестве операционной системы для жизненных трудностей и невзгод. Философия — это не предмет для учебных аудиторий. Это набор уроков, взятых из жизни.
Название работы Эпиктета «Энхиридион» переводится с греческого «под рукой» или «в руке». Это как раз то, для чего предназначалась философия: чтобы быть у вас в руках, быть вашим продолжением. Это не то, что вы прочитаете один раз и поставите на полку. Это как раз то, о чем однажды написал Марк Аврелий: нужно драться не оружием, а руками, поскольку они всегда при вас58.
Надеюсь, что в какой-то степени эта книга передала вам те уроки и вооружила вас ими.
Теперь вы философ и человек действия. И это не противоречие.
