Стэнли Кьюниц писал стихи до девяноста лет. Его произведение «Слои» резюмирует всё, о чём вы прочитали в этой книге. Он использовал метафору постепенно углубляющегося опыта своего путешествия, которое слой за слоем продвигается в выбранном направлении. Он бы с радостью остался, отдохнул немного, а потом вернулся в старые знакомые места; жил бы на поверхности среди «мусора», ходил бы по магазинам, впадал в беспамятство, предавался утехам, а потом успокаивался, но он не может, да и не хочет.
И всё же я иду за поворотом поворот,
отчасти торжествуя,
и воля невредимая моя
идёт за мною…
И в самый чёрный час…
сияниеподобный голос
мне говорит:
«Живи в бездонной толще,
не в мусоре, разбросанном по полу».
И пусть уменья во мне нет
расшифровать её,
уверен я, грядущая глава
моей книги трансформаций
уже написана.
Не перестану изменяться.
Мы тоже ещё не достигли состояния, в котором должны были бы остановить рост.
Вопросы, которые обращаются к нашим главным проблемам, призывают к масштабной, полноценной жизни. А пока мы не зададим их себе, продолжим ходить в слишком тесных ботинках. В путешествии, которое мы называем жизнью, лучше всего помогают не ответы, которые лишь соблазняют вре́менными истинами, а вопросы, которые заставляют нас расти и каждый день прикладывать ладонь к стволу, чтобы посмотреть, насколько выше мы вчерашней отметки. Добросовестная борьба может помочь нам достичь большей жизни, а потом смерти, которая будет достойна всего того, что мы пережили. На этом пути мы также можем обрести немного любви, немного понимания, много сострадания и, если повезёт, много неприятностей.
Хотя конечная цель путешествия и наша уникальная роль в великом мироустройстве так и останутся загадкой, наши вопросы помогут нам удержаться на пути. Что-то хочет жить в нас, и мы должны позволить ему. Где начинается это путешествие и куда оно простирается – вопрос всем вопросам. Но теперь, когда мы больше о них знаем, можем и сами ощутить: вся наша жизнь есть вопрос. Как мудро сказал Юнг,
Смысл моего существования – в том вопросе, который задаёт сама жизнь… или, наоборот, я и сам являюсь этим вопросом[119].
