Оно пустынное и уединенное, но до него легко добраться на машине, а еще оттуда открывается прекрасный вид на город и одну из знаменитых достопримечательностей Нью-Йорка. Превосходное место для того, чтобы холодным декабрьским утром воскресенья закопать две отрубленные головы. В это время там никого не было, а любое транспортное средство могло подъехать лишь по одной дороге, и заметить его издалека было бы легко. Согласно метеорологическим сводкам за тот период, до второго декабря никаких сильных холодов не наблюдалось, и земля не должна была сильно промерзнуть, хотя Коттингем сказал, что копать было трудно, потому что «земля жесткая, много камней».
Коттингем, конечно, может лгать, потому что серийным убийцам это свойственно, но если он говорит правду и до останков не добрались животные, то кости обеих женщин можно найти и извлечь. Собаки, специально обученные находить по запаху лежалые трупы и следы разложения, поглощенные почвой десятки лет назад, до сих пор успешно находили пропавших без вести американских солдат, убитых еще семьдесят лет назад, во время Второй мировой войны, и сегодня используются в поисках останков пилота Амелии Эрхарт, которая бесследно сгинула в Тихом океане в 1937 году [2].
