Или modernity (иногда на русском так и пишется – модернити) – понятие, примерно близкое Новому и Новейшему времени в русскоязычной историографии, однако скорее концептуальное, чем хронологическое. Development (англ.) – понятие, важное для социальных наук с середины ХХ века. Оно подразумевает возможность правительств стран, прежде всего за пределами Запада, активно влиять на социальные и экономические процессы, чтобы двигать страну вперед, в сторону бесспорного прогресса (под которым обычно имеется в виду всеобщая грамотность, победа над голодом и болезнями, развитое сельское хозяйство, индустриализация). Отсюда противопоставление «развитых» и «развивающихся» стран.
